Since most of my family lives in Newfoundland, I tend to visit there quite often. When I go there, I spend most of my time playing cards with the grandparents or outside connecting with nature, whether it’s hiking, fishing, or just watching the ocean. I am so grateful to have these moments as it helps me unwind and connect with both nature and family. These experiences have helped me appreciate the importance of community and relationships both in my own life and in learning, thus reinforcing the value of connection and belonging within the classroom. Spending time with family allowed me to reflect on how significant it is to have the support and trust in your life. I have seen many students who have struggled with this, and I want to create a classroom where all students get what they need to feel supported and loved. Additionally, connecting to the land has fostered a deeper respect for nature, I believe students should get to be outside and learn. I want to incorporate land and place-based learning in my classroom so students can get to experience the type of connection I have to Newfoundland.
